Minnesota Hay Bank Donates Bales to Rescue Group as Prices Climb

After a very wet spring and a dry summer, the Minnesota Hay Bank is fielding more calls come in from people who need help paying for hay - and they are also bailing out a hoofed rescue group in Zimmerman, Minn. Drew Fitzpatrick, a beneficiary, told Fox 9 News that if it weren't for the Minnesota Hay Bank, things may be a little different for donkeys Helen and Wait.

Starved Horse Teaches Humans About Courage

It started in June with a dreaded phone call and a desperate plea for help. A miniature horse was down and unable to get up. When Theresa Batchelor of Beauty's Haven Equine Rescue arrived to evaluate the small palomino mare, what she found was a horrible abused horse near death. However, when miniature horse, Betsy Rose, arrived at the rescue, Batchelor saw something in this pony that wouldn't let her euthanize the pony without a fight. "She had determination in her eyes that said she wants to live."

West Virginia Horse Rescue Wins Feed a Horse in Need Contest

The October 2013 issue of Horse Illustrated first introduced the "Feed a Horse in Need" contest to readers, asking them to sign onto HorseChannel.com to nominate their favorite equine rescue organization. From more than 1,700 submitted entries and 11 chosen finalists, Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue was selected as the winner.

Abandoned Horses Struggle to Recover after Recession

Hundreds of Maryland's horses are homeless, abandoned by people who could not afford to care for them in the aftermath of the recession. Horse ownership increased in the decade prior to the economic downturn in 2009. But with the crash of stock and housing markets, many owners were unable to afford the roughly $5,000 a year it takes to care for a horse.

USA Equestrian Trust Awards Second Round of 2013 Grants

The USA Equestrian Trust has awarded $55,000 in grants to help fund four projects by equine nonprofits. The awards come on top of nearly $210,000 awarded in May for 10 projects by equine non profits.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA) has accredited 20 additional Thoroughbred aftercare facilities, which are now eligible to receive financial grants from the TAA for the ongoing care of retired Thoroughbreds.

As Ice Horse celebrates the official release of their new product designs, CANTER, a member of the Thoroughbred Charities of America, became an unexpected beneficiary. While Ice Horse transitioned to new product designs, the company's management realized that there were a few dealers with old merchandise on the shelves.

Jill Milan Introduces 'Lucky' Pendant to Benefit Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue

 

Jill Milan®, a provider of designer Italian handbags , today announced its first jewelry offering as part of a fundraising effort to support Southern California Thoroughbred Rescue, a non-profit organization which rescues at-risk thoroughbreds from slaughter. The "Lucky" pendant, made of sterling silver, is named for a horse recently rescued by SCTR and net proceeds from its sales will help defray costs of care and rehabilitation for Lucky and other rescued horses.
